Meet Wabi: A Little Reminder That You Can Come as You Are
Some days, we feel ready for whatever comes our way. Other days, even the small things take more effort than we expected.
Life holds both. Yet it can be easy to feel that we should arrive everywhere looking well, feeling positive, and holding everything together.
At Touchstone, we want you to know that you can come as you are.
That thought brings us to a new introduction: Karen’s dog, Wabi, and the meaning behind his name.
A Small Name with a Thoughtful Meaning
Wabi’s name was inspired by wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic tradition that appreciates imperfection, simplicity, and the changes that come with time. It invites us to notice beauty in things as they are, including the qualities that make them weathered, uneven, or temporary.
Think of a well-loved wooden table, the irregular shape of handmade pottery, or a garden moving from summer into autumn. Their beauty comes partly from their character and the changes they carry.
This is only a brief introduction to a rich cultural tradition. For our reflections here, it offers a gentle starting point: perhaps something does not need to be perfect to be meaningful, beautiful, or worthy of care.
And perhaps we can extend a little of that kindness to ourselves.

Meet Wabi
There is something lovely about giving a dog a name that carries that reminder.
Anyone who has shared life with a dog knows that companionship often happens in ordinary moments. A walk. A familiar greeting. A quiet few minutes sitting together.
You do not need to find the right words or have an interesting story to tell. Sometimes, simply being together is enough.
The message accompanying Wabi’s introduction says it beautifully:
“Some days are easy.
Some days are hard.”
Both kinds of days belong in a real life.
Wabi gives us a personal way to introduce that message at Touchstone. His name is a reminder to make room for the day we are actually having, rather than the one we think we should be having.
Letting Go of Having It All Together
Many of us carry expectations that leave little room for being human.
We think we should have more energy. We should be further along. We should cope better, feel differently, or have everything organized before taking time for ourselves.
Those expectations can follow us even into moments intended for rest. We might feel we need to finish every task before sitting down, or explain why we deserve a break.
What would happen if we softened one of those expectations?
Perhaps today’s walk can be shorter. Perhaps dinner can be simple. Perhaps an unfinished task can wait while you take a quiet moment.
You can still care about your responsibilities and your goals while recognising your limits. Giving yourself some breathing room can begin with something as small as acknowledging, “Today has been difficult.”
There is no perfect way to do that, either.
Finding Meaning in Ordinary Moments
Inspired by wabi-sabi’s appreciation of simplicity and change, we can look more closely at the everyday things around us.
The leaves outside will not stay the same colour for long. A favourite mug may show years of use. A familiar chair may be comfortable precisely because it has been part of so many ordinary evenings.
These things invite us to pause and notice.
You might try drinking your morning tea without reaching immediately for your phone. Step outside and look at what has changed since last week. Spend a few minutes with a pet, giving your attention to that small shared moment.
These are simple invitations. Choose one that fits your day and leave room for it to be ordinary.
Making Room for Yourself
The message we want to share through Wabi’s introduction is simple: you are welcome to be human.
You can be tired. You can be hopeful and worried at the same time. You can be navigating change without knowing exactly what comes next.
At Touchstone, we believe care begins with meeting people where they are. You do not have to arrive with everything figured out to ask questions, explore support, or make time for yourself.
Wabi’s name gives us a lovely reminder to carry forward: there is value in the life unfolding right in front of us, with all its uneven edges and unexpected moments.
As we begin exploring philosophies and reflective practices from around the world, we will return to that spirit of curiosity and kindness.
For today, perhaps it is enough to pause, give yourself a little space, and remember:
You can show up exactly as you are.
